A sixth-grade boy is faced with the reality of homosexuality and homophobia when one of his teachers, despite being an excellent educator and positive role model for his students, is condemned by the community and eventually fired from his job because he is homosexual and lives with another man. This is an early novel that deals sensitively with the nature of prejudice, and emphasizes the fact that homosexuals are people who have feelings, emotions, and feel love just as anyone else. The summer after they finish the sixth grade, Bird discovers that her best friend josh is HIV positive.
